Sunset Hill Country Club originated from Adolphus Busch's vision for an exclusive South County dining and social venue in 1910. He sought a secluded, wooded property where members could connect with nature's splendor while enjoying Anheuser-Busch offerings. Busch settled on an initial 26 acres site and built Sunset Inn, serving over 1,800 charter members.
After Adolphus' passing in 1913, his son August A. Busch Sr. assumed leadership, continuing Sunset Hill's legacy. He purchased adjoining parcels until amassing over 170 acres. In 1915, August Sr., fellow member Jesse Carleton, and Eberhard Anheuser proposed adding a golf course to leverage the land's graceful contours.
Carleton recommended the acclaimed Foulis brothers, Jim, Robert, and David, to design the layout. Scottish-born golf professionals, the Foulis learned their craft from legendary Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews. Jim Foulis had recently won the 1896 U.S. Open, bringing renown as a course architect. Brother Robert was considered America's foremost expert in golf greenkeeping and grasses.
When completed in 1917, Sunset Hill's new course garnered praise as one of the country's most strategically designed and scenically resplendent layouts. It fulfilled the Busch family vision for a private recreational and dining retreat set amidst nature's majesty in St. Louis County.
