Prairie Dunes is an American original, with its rolling hills and links-style layout reminiscent of legendary seaside courses in Scotland. Yet this scenic masterpiece lies in the heart of Kansas, making it a true hidden gem.
The course traces its roots to the Carey family, avid golfers who commissioned the great architect Perry Maxwell in 1935 to design Prairie Dunes on their 480-acre property. Maxwell recognized the land's potential, saying "There are 118 holes here, and all I have to do is eliminate 100." His vision transformed the rugged Kansas prairie into a world-class golf course using simple tools - teams of men with horses and mules, wagons, plows and wheelbarrows sculpting the greens and fairways completely by hand.
The course opened just two years later in 1937, though only nine holes were ready. The second nine holes were later completed in 1957 by Maxwell's son Press, fully realizing his father's dream. Now consistently ranked among America's finest courses, Prairie Dunes stands as a tribute to the purity of the game, blending seamlessly into the natural beauty of the Kansas landscape. Its distinctly American style has made it both an inspiration and a treasure for golfers from around the world.
